On a day like today I feel like singing the theme song to Mr. Roger's. A little after 11:00 one of the kids from the neighborhood rang our doorbell and asked if Oliver could come out to play. I was puzzled as our local school district returned to having school in person 5 days a week on March 1. I'm not sure of the reason, but the public school had off today, and the Christian school had a half-day. Since the boys were almost done with our schoolwork at that point and Nadia was already done, I said they could go out after we ate lunch. I admit that the gorgeous weather was a significant contributing factor in my decision. It was about ten degrees cooler than yesterday, but it was sunny out. Milo and I walked for 4 miles. I swept and organized the garage and vacuumed the inside of the van. The kids had already been outside before lunch because I said they could read outside if they wanted to. Nadia read on her large swing with Milo, Ian read his math book on the trampoline, and Oliver read sitting on the spinning seesaw. Milo spent a lot of time outside today with one or more of the four of us. The kids also enjoyed playing with Nya, our neighbor's golden retriever who is 3 months old. Oliver, Ian, and some of the neighbors worked together to build what they call their "fort."
I hadn't tried any new recipes this week until tonight. We usually have breakfast for dinner once a week. I made two new recipes - blini (since this week is Maslenitsa in Russia) and boxty since St. Patrick's Day is next week. Since Sunday is Pi Day, I'm going to try a new pie recipe - Szarlotka, which is a Polish apple pie. Blinis will be added to our rotation as Oliver, Ian, and I loved them, and Nadia thought they were okay. She liked the boxty better than the blinis.
We finished another Newbery winner today, Dear Mr. Henshaw. We are definitely fans of books by Beverly Cleary, but we think one of her other books should have been selected for the award rather than that one.
