Missing teeth; farewell birds

I was surprised when the dentist told me awhile back that Nadia is missing a permanent tooth on her top jaw. Usually her baby teeth fell out in pairs, but that year only one fell out. The reason was that baby tooth doesn't have a permanent tooth behind it. When Ian saw the orthodontist in January, he said Ian is missing a few permanent teeth. That was even more surprising, but he explained that it's quite common. Yesterday Oliver had x-rays for the first time at the dentist, and when they told me he's missing a few permanent teeth, I wasn't surprised at all. Paul assumes it's from my DNA because he says wasn't missing any teeth. Who knows. All three kids got a good report at the dentist yesterday. They said Nadia was doing a better job of brushing (Yay!), and Ian had one spot he needs to do a better job with. Ian had one six year molar that came in since his last appointment. Nadia has two permanent teeth that have come in even though the baby teeth they are replacing haven't fallen out yet. He said that she has three months to get them out herself, or he's going to pull them in August. Hopefully she can wiggle them enough to get them out herself.

I was a little nervous about whether Oliver would go back for his appointment given how clingy he has been lately. He had a look on his face like he wasn't so sure about this, and the hygienist took his hand and reminded him he had already done this a few times. Thankfully he followed her back and cooperated without crying. I breathed a big sigh of relief. Paul took him to soccer practice on Wednesday night. I was with Nadia at her softball game, and then I left the game to go to choir rehearsal. It took some effort to get him on the field for the practice, but he did. Today at gym class he came crying to me a few times because he thought I wasn't staying to watch (particularly when they transitioned outside to play soccer), but he did join the class for the whole time as long as I stayed there and sat on the sidelines working on my Bible study on the book of Ruth. When they were in the gym he was really doing a great job of running while they were playing four corners, but when they were outside playing soccer he was really just goofing around the whole time. Very frustrating. I saw another girl who just turned five out there doing an awesome job. It's not a case that he's too young. Ironically when he was younger he seemed to have the most athletic talent of our three kids. Go figure. At this point I am not planning on signing him up for soccer next year. I already signed him up for basketball next winter, and I am planning on having him take ice skating lessons for the first time next winter. Hopefully those will go well. This phase won't last forever.

Paul has been going in to work earlier and earlier each morning. The last two days he set his alarm for 2:00AM. I have no idea how he is functioning on such a little amount of sleep because he has been going to bed around 10-10:30pm (meaning he is getting less than four hours of sleep). I personally prefer to get 8-9 hours of sleep although Oliver got up at 5:50 (more than an hour earlier than normal) this morning, and I went to bed a little later than usual last night (11:00) because I was working on a big order on Shutterfly. I'm tired today after "only" getting a little less than 7 hours of sleep. He left for work a little after 2:00AM and got home around 7:15PM this evening. I realize two hours of that is his commute, but still that's a very long work day, especially considering he goes to work six days a week most of the time.

Tomorrow is a very special day for Paul's parents. It's their fiftieth wedding anniversary. What an incredible milestone! Congratulations, Al and Ellie! Before my mom's diagnosis, I thought my parents would achieve that milestone in a couple of years. I am thankful that my parents and Paul's parents honored their vows in a day and age where that is not the norm.

The three baby robins who had been living in the nest on our front door hit a milestone today as well. They flew out of their nest this morning. I removed the nest along with the one egg that hadn't hatched and cleaned the door today. It's amazing how quickly birds grow, as they only hatched 14 days ago. Now I have one more reason to want a storm door as those birds really did a number on my poor wreath.

In the past Paul hasn't usually gotten me anything for Mother's Day. We were often on vacation on Mother's Day. He told me today that he was getting me a weed wacker that is battery operated because I can't start the gas powered one we have. Pop Pop couldn't get it started either on Monday and another time I asked our neighbor to start it for me, and he couldn't either so it wasn't just me. I will sell our old one. It still works. It actually wasn't used that much. I never would have dreamed I'd be excited about a weed wacker, but I am! With Paul working such long hours it's hard for him to have time to do that task, and now I can do it whenever it needs to be done (which will be far more often than Paul did it the past 8 1/2 years that we have lived in this house). As I said before, the past twelve months I've been very focused on making improvements around the house, and getting a new weed wacker goes right along with that!
