Thankful Tuesday

Nadia (9), Job (9), Amrit (10), and Ian (7)
1. Paul and I still seem to have escaped the cold that the three kids have had. We're thankful and praying they will be healthy again soon.

2. Last Wednesday I took the kids to a fire safety program at the library in the morning. I think their favorite part was meeting the Dalmatian from the fire station. Then we had lunch at Applebee's (yum!) using a gift card Nadia got for her birthday (thanks, Grandpa!). While there I learned that Applebee's is giving every child (12 and under) a free kids' meal on October 31 - up to 4 free kids' meals per 1 adult meal purchased. We are going to take advantage of that! Our next stop was the new Children's Museum, which the kids continue to enjoy.

3. They would have liked to stay at the museum longer, but our last stop that day was the eye doctor. I had a contact refit. I decided to go with monovision which means my dominant eye will have a contact to help me see things clearly that are far away, and my right contact will help me read. The past 20+ years my contacts have just been helping me see things that are far away. I have been wearing bifocal glasses the past few weeks. It has been SUCH a wonderful thing to be able to read again, and I have had far fewer headaches, but I still prefer contacts to glasses. If there is a way I can see with contacts as clearly as I can with these bifocal glasses, that is my preference. They called me on Friday and said my trial lenses had come in. Paul is going to pick them up this afternoon when he has his eye appointment. In light of my astigmatism, she thought monovision was the way to go rather than bifocal contacts. Ian also had an eye exam. She said his prescription had changed a small amount, but not enough to warrant getting him new glasses.

4. Last Monday I attended a faculty meeting via Zoom (like Skype or FaceTime). It was so nice to skip the drive and not need to pay a babysitter. I'll probably do that once a month as long as I'm an adjunct and the meetings are held on a day I'm not already scheduled to be on campus. Yesterday afternoon I did attend a meeting on campus. It wasn't required, but it was for the College of Education and since the Dean and President of the University were there I figured it was a good opportunity to show my face. One of the neighbors babysat the kids for 3 hours (including driving time).

5. I exercised three times last week. I didn't quite achieve my goal of four times, but it was a step in the right direction! Maybe this week I will achieve my goal.

6. Ian got a "tackle" and ran for 9 yards in his flag football game on Saturday, and Nadia passed her audition to be allowed to sing the National Anthem at the game this Saturday. The weather was gorgeous for the games!

7. Over the past nine days I have done a better job of pacing myself. I asked Paul to take the kids to the fall festival for an hour on Saturday afternoon. I have always taken them in the past. It's something I enjoy doing, but not going enabled me to cook dinner and clean the kitchen. Similarly, Paul mowed the lawn on Sunday. I usually prefer to mow because I need the exercise and like getting some fresh air, but not mowing enabled me to #1 have time to do the weeding that I hadn't done for more than 2 months (yikes!) and #2 get some schoolwork done. I really splurged on Sunday and actually watched the Steelers game. It felt wonderful. It was the first game this year I really watched without doing other things at the same time, and honestly it was really the first thing I had done strictly for my leisure (aside from blogging) over the past almost two months.

8. Speaking of football, both of our teams won on Sunday. The Steelers played the Chiefs who were undefeated going into that game (not any more!), and the Giants won their first game of the season by beating the Broncos. I didn't see much of that game because it started at 8:30, and I am going to bed earlier these days in light of the fact I get up before 6:00AM almost every day.

9. This morning I was thankful the kids all slept in. They really needed it. I love that with homeschooling you can be flexible and start a little later than usual as need be. The kids get up early on Tuesdays and Thursdays due to my work schedule, and this week they also got up early on Sunday because the boys we were hosting had to be at church by 7:15AM.

10. It was wonderful hosting Job and Amrit. During the church service we learned more about Amrit's story. It was amazing to see pictures of his home (a small barn) in Nepal where he lived with his mom before moving into a Children's Home. He had to work very hard (carrying bananas on his head, walking a long distance to get work, and such) and wasn't able to go to school when he lived there. His father died when he was young. In the orphanage he has clean water, adequate food, goes to school, etc. Both Job and Amrit have sponsors, and it was encouraging to me to think about the kids that we sponsor.

11. We finished our longest book ever. It was over 500 pages long!  Ian keeps saying he wishes there were more books in the series; it was the fourth, and it was wonderful. I give two thumbs up to the Wingfeather Saga series! Now we are reading a much shorter book - A Door in the Wall. Since I don't have time for leisure reading for myself right now (I'm reading nonfiction related to the courses I am teaching instead), I am grateful I can at least enjoy reading children's books to the kids! Reading to them is one of my favorite parts of motherhood. Waking them up when they are sleeping is one of my least favorite parts, and I'm thankful including this week there are just seven more weeks of that!
