Today we went to the Fiesta that the library had as the conclusion to the summer reading program. It was a perfect day to spend an hour at the library because it rained cats and dogs most of the day. The Fiesta was from 11:00-1:00, but we got their late and left early. If I had to do it over again, I would have paid Gabby to babysit Ian so I could have just taken Nadia. It was really hard to help Nadia with the crafts and such and keep Ian out of trouble. He didn't get much out of the Fiesta aside from doing a little watercolor painting and licking two rice crackers (I read the package to make sure he could have those). He wanted some of the other food (to lick), but most things (vanilla wafers, chocolate chip cookies, etc.) I knew had some offending ingredient. The first 45 minutes were for 6 different craft stations - origami, painting, coloring, making a tissue paper flower, making a drum, etc. The next segment was for eating various foods - hummus, guacamole, rice crackers, salsa chips, bean dip, etc.
Then they got out two pinatas. Nadia was blindfolded and tried to hit a strawberry shaped pinata. The children ages five and under were hitting that pinata. I wish I had my camera!! We had to leave before they broke the pinata. The older kids were very close to breaking their pinata when we left, but the younger kids hadn't even made a dent in theirs. I am curious how long it took! The last part was for the awards. There were two sheets to keep track of things for both kids. One had various types of activities listed on it (attending a program at the library, reading a nonfiction book, etc.). Nadia did 10 of the 11 activities (she can't write a paragraph, lol). The other two sheets were for recording how many pages we read to the kids each day. I started that and ditched them because most of their books don't have page numbers on them, and I found it really tedious to count the pages as it was usually over 100 pages every time I read to Nadia. The awards today were based on how many pages they read. Maybe next summer I'll keep track of it, or maybe I'll wait until they're actually reading themselves. :-)
